When you load up Spotify, a great big chunk of the time you can’t think what to play, right? You default back to your old favourites, those albums and songs you played on repeat when you first discovered you could make them yours.
This isn’t about guilty pleasures; it’s about those songs you’ll still be listening to when you’re old and in your rocking chair. So, enter Teenage Kicks – a playlist series that sees bands running through the music they listened to in their formative years.
Next up, Frozemode.
Migos – Call Casting
Cho Hollo: RIP Takeoff; he came on impeccably. Song reminds me of college days.
POLITICAL PEAK x SNEAKBO – Wave Like Us
Cho Hollo: Me and my boy used to rap these lyrics every day.
150 GRIZZY x M DARGG – Look Like You
Cho Hollo: Was lowkey the song of the century.
Giggs x Skepta – Look Out
IV Gatlin: Two of the biggest legends in the game, spitting some of their hardest bars on one track. So many quotables on this one. Had this on repeat on my way to and from secondary school.
Young Thug – Harambe
IV Gatlin: When I was about 16 I started getting into music from Atlanta. Young Thug always stood out and inspired me because he always took crazy risks. I’d never heard a rapper do some of the stuff he was doing with his vocals. This track epitomises that.
The Streets – Stay Positive
IV Gatlin: I remember when I was in my early teens, Kidulthood was my favourite movie. It’s got a 10 out of 10 soundtrack – including this track, of course. It introduced me to The Streets, too. The song has so much nostalgia for me, and it soundtracked a few dark times.
Frank Ocean – Nights
Lisong: This track always hits me with nostalgia – got me through a lot of late nights and angst haha. A lot of my early music (now locked away) was heavily inspired by ‘Blonde’, with this probably being my favourite track from it. Beat switch goes crazy as well. Need that album, Mr Ocean!
Lil Wayne – 6 Foot 7 Foot
Lisong: Wayne was really one of the main rappers that first got me into rapping, writing bars and making music. This track is full of quotables hitting you non-stop one after the other. Can still rap most of the bars from memory, which is impressive for me and my trash memory.
G-Dragon – Crooked
Lisong: Had a little K-pop phase in my early teens before it became as popular as it is today. Even though K-pop ain’t really my thing now, G-Dragon still remains a big inspiration for me with his notoriety in fashion and music. This track had mini-me feeling like a rock star.
Taken from the August 2025 issue of Dork. Frozemode’s new album is coming soon.
