When you release an album as flaming hot as Nova Twins’ sophomore album ‘Supernova’, what do you do next? Do you stick to the winning formula and hope for the best? Or do you simply increase the madness, hit those drums harder, and thrash the guitar even more? Well, thankfully, the Twins have chosen the latter in their scorching and soaring third album ‘Parasites & Butterflies’.
Lead single ‘Monster’, a splicing together of pounding hardcore drums and nu-metal techy details with deliciously scuzzy reverb, telling the tale of a band beginning to feel the weight of success, was an addictive taste of what was to come on this triumphant third record.
If the duo were feeling any anxiety at the prospect of a widely anticipated new album, it certainly doesn’t show. Amy Love’s vocal has never sounded better, as content in the delirious depths of glitch-rock anthem ‘Sandman’, the spat-out rap-rock style of brawler ‘N.O.V.A’, and the soaring heights of aptly named ‘Soprano’ and arena-rock worthy ‘Hide & Seek’.
Completely unafraid to play with textures and tempo, instead using their energy to unleash pure, unadulterated passion across each one of these twelve tracks, has resulted in a record with no weak point; each track could have been a single. ‘Parallel Universe’ screeches into existence, one second slowing down to let the voice in your head beg for help, the next literally screaming back to full speed.
It might be too soon to declare this Nova Twins’ magnum opus, but it’s certainly not too soon to say that this is their best album to date. If ‘Supernova’ was their first foray into the public eye, ‘Parasites & Butterflies’ is them claiming the spotlight they so deserve. Nova Twins are superstars; don’t for a second think otherwise.
