Joy Crookes has shared new single ‘Perfect Crime’, taken from her upcoming second album ‘Juniper’.
The South London singer-songwriter’s new track, co-produced by Crookes alongside Harvey Grant, draws inspiration from Western movies. “‘Perfect Crime’ is written about that scary bit of time just before you go back into the dating world and you need to just bite the bullet and dive into something,” Crookes explains. “It’s kind of like my version of a mantra or doing positive affirmations in the mirror…this song is basically me giving myself a pep talk.”
‘Juniper’ follows Crookes’ 2021 debut ‘Skin’, which received BRIT and Mercury Prize nominations. The new album features collaborations with Vince Staples on ‘Pass The Salt’ and Kano on ‘Mathematics’, with production from Blue May, Tev’n, and Harvey Grant.
“With Juniper, every situation is visceral and I’m very much in it. It’s me in the centre of it all,” Crookes says of the album, which was created during a period of personal challenges. “I was in the trenches,” she adds. “But the studio became my solace. What you hear is live and direct from that time.”
