For Those I Love returns with ‘Of The Sorrows’, his first new music since 2021

For Those I Love has shared a new single ‘Of The Sorrows’, marking their first release since their 2021 self-titled debut album.

The project, helmed by Dublin artist David Balfe, explores themes of urban displacement and personal reflection in the new track.

“When I wrote ‘Of The Sorrows’, it felt like I was bargaining with myself. It was one of the first songs I’d written to myself, for myself, while still trying to embody the feelings and thoughts of my closest peers,” Balfe says. “At its heart, ‘Of The Sorrows’ is about a city rapidly boxing you out, and the choices you make in order to stay.”

Balfe elaborates on the challenges of living in Dublin: “I don’t know if it’s possible to stay and live a life in Dublin where there is even a modicum of comfort, without actively making the city more difficult to live in over the long run.”

The artist also addresses the gap between releases, saying, “There was a time I did feel like I didn’t have anything to say as I have no interest in populating space for the sake of it. Then one day it all just started to come out.”

While For Those I Love’s debut album centred on Balfe’s childhood friend and musical collaborator Paul Curran, who passed away in 2018, the forthcoming record takes a more personal direction. The new material comes from a collection of verses written in Balfe’s home studio, where he produced instrumentals to accompany his evolving narrative.

Additional music from the upcoming, currently untitled album will be released in the coming months.
