Paul McCartney has made his return to Saturday Night Live (SNL) for the show’s 50th anniversary episode, performing a medley of songs from The Beatles’ ‘Abbey Road’.
The performance marked McCartney’s fifth appearance as a musical guest on the long-running sketch comedy show, and his first since 2012. His set featured three tracks from the iconic album: ‘Golden Slumbers’, ‘Carry That Weight’ and ‘The End’.
McCartney began the medley at the piano for ‘Golden Slumbers’ before transitioning into ‘Carry That Weight’. For the finale of ‘The End’, he moved to perform with an electric guitar as the audience participated with rhythmic clapping.
The evening featured additional musical performances from various artists, including Miley Cyrus and Lil Wayne. Sabrina Carpenter and Paul Simon opened the show with ‘Homeward Bound’, a song Simon had previously performed on SNL with George Harrison in 1976.
McCartney’s previous SNL musical guest appearances were in 1980, 1993, 2010, and 2012, with additional cameo appearances in 2006, 2013, and 2015.
The musician has recently spoken about his plans for new music, stating, “I’ve been working on a lot of songs, and have had to put it to the side because of the tour. So, I’m hoping to get back into that and finish up a lot of these songs. So, how’s about that? ‘My New Year’s resolution is to finish a new album!’”
