Bilk’s second album opens like a sledgehammer through your nan’s conservatory – all bravado, broken glass, and absolutely no apologies. ‘Essex, Drugs and Rock and Roll’ does precisely what it promises, delivering tracks that feel pulled straight from MTV2 circa 2003.
Opening track ‘R n R’ arrives with the subtlety of a rugby team at closing time, channelling equal parts Gallagher swagger and Essex cheek. The production keeps things deliberately rough around the edges – these are songs meant to be played loud enough to worry the neighbours.
It’s in the album’s more playful moments where Bilk truly shine. ‘Slag’ somehow manages to turn dated playground taunts into social commentary, while ‘Skidmark’ spits out one-liners faster than a sixth former who’s just discovered stand-up comedy.
Between the chaos, glimpses of something deeper emerge. ‘Summer Days’ strips away the posturing to reveal genuine heart, suggesting these lads might have more on their minds than just the next big night out.
For their target audience – teenagers who really enjoy wanking jokes and are discovering their first proper taste of rebellion – this record is nothing short of essential. It might not be breaking new ground, but it’s having far too much fun to care.
