Moonchild Sanelly – Full Moon

Label: Transgressive
Released: 10th January 2025

‘Full Moon’ is a riot from start to finish: beautifully disruptive and impossible to ignore. Moonchild Sanelly, South Africa’s answer to the question nobody knew to ask, has crafted an album that treats genre boundaries like suggestions, written in pencil, from very far away.

‘Scrambled Eggs’ bursts forth with the confidence of someone who knows exactly how good they are, all staccato wordplay and bass that could wake your neighbours’ neighbours. But it’s ‘Sweet & Savage’ where Sanelly really shows her hand – the production prowess of a warehouse rave meeting the melodic sensibility of a chart-topper, explaining exactly why everyone from Gorillaz to Self Esteem has come knocking.

‘Do My Dance’ sits at the album’s heart like a jewel in a particularly outrageous crown. It’s happy hardcore for the art school crowd, nostalgia filtered through a thoroughly modern lens. The kind of track that makes perfect sense the moment you hear it, even as you wonder how it exists at all.

Behind the boards, Johan Hugo proves himself a master of controlled chaos. His production gives each track room to breathe while maintaining the coherence of a gallery exhibition – if galleries pumped out earth-shaking beats. ‘Big Booty’ exemplifies this balance perfectly, serving commentary and catchiness in equal measure.

‘Full Moon’ is a total joy, a sass-filled party that refuses to let you catch your breath. This is music that demands attention, rewards repeated listens, and proves that the future of pop isn’t just bright – it’s blindingly brilliant.
