In a city where musical heritage runs as deep as its harbour, Viva Sounds festival is preparing to transform Gothenburg’s winter darkness into a three-day celebration of boundary-pushing sounds. The 2024 edition – running from 28th-30th November – promises to be the festival’s most internationally diverse offering yet, with over 60 artists delivering 75+ performances across multiple venues in Sweden’s western cultural capital.
What sets Viva Sounds apart isn’t just its resistance to Gothenburg’s notoriously unpredictable weather – it’s the festival’s commitment to creating a platform where established acts share stages with tomorrow’s headliners, embracing discovery and turning the city’s historic venues into laboratories of musical innovation. It’s not just another festival; it’s three days of carefully curated chaos.
Here are some of the acts who’ve caught our eye ahead of this year’s event.
SODAKILL
SWEDEN
Hängmattan – Friday 29th November
Stockholm’s latest noise merchants, Sodakill, are crafting something they call sodapunk – a fizzing cocktail of surfpunk, doom, glam and pop. Drawing from the confrontational energy of Refused, the riot-grrrl spirit of Bikini Kill, and the raw power of Hole, they’re building bridges between punk zealots and metal devotees. Their debut single ‘Easy’ marked not so much a beginning as a calculated renaissance, built on battle-tested songwriting and unflinching attitude.
MARIA JANE SMITH
SWEDEN
Oceanen – Friday 29th November
Before finding her voice in music, Maria Jane Smith dreamed of crafting stories with a pen. That storytelling instinct found new life when she picked up a guitar, leading to her acclaimed partnership in folk-pop duo Smith & Thell. Their 2017 debut ‘Soulprints’ struck gold twice over, with earworms like ‘Forgive Me Friend’ and ‘Hotel Walls’ amassing over 200 million streams. Now Smith charts her own course, collaborating with producer David Morup in Los Angeles on her solo debut, ‘A Glitch in the Matrix’. The album arrives spring 2025.
AGITATOR
SWEDEN
Pustervik (upstairs) – Saturday 30th November
In the grand tradition of bands that capture lightning in a bottle, Agitator transform everyday existence into electric manifestos. Born from basement jams and railway car rehearsals, their sound pulls threads from Joy Division, The Cure, and techno’s relentless pulse. In their own words: “We’ve fooled people into thinking we play psychedelic techno, but we just play sounds we like. We’re a Swedish new-wave post-punk band. We pretend to hate what we love. We like swimming, neon lights, and before gigs, Felix jumps to touch the ceiling to Tom Waits and Mintu.”
EMILIA PANTIĆ
SWEDEN
Oceanen – Friday 29th November
Since her 2022 arrival with ‘Roadkill’, Emilia Pantić has emerged as one of Swedish pop’s most compelling new voices. Her trajectory has been meteoric: from follow-up singles ‘Säg det som du menar det’, ‘Död’, and ‘SOS’ to her debut EP ‘Hatar att du lät oss gå’. 2024 marks her evolution from promising newcomer to main stage presence.
FLYPAPER
UK
Hängmattan – Friday 29th November
Holy Moly – Saturday 30th November
London’s flypaper returned earlier this year with EP ‘another orbit’, dropping via PNKSLM Recordings. Following the critically-embraced ‘big nada’ (2023) and a successful UK tour – including a Swedish debut at PNKSLM’s decade celebration in Stockholm – this new EP reinforces Rory Sear’s evolution from Beachtape guitarist to solo architect. Under the flypaper banner, Sear crafts intimate indie-pop that puts songwriting centre stage, setting the stage for a full-length debut in 2025.
ADJUA
UK
Gathenhielmska Huset – Thursday 28th November
Holy Moly – Friday 29th November
Welsh-born Ghanaian artist Adjua crafts a compelling fusion of indie-grunge and R&B. Her haunting melodies and intricate harmonies serve as the perfect vessel for lyrics that dive deep into self-reflection and matters of the heart. Each composition emerges like a perfectly formed crystal – beautiful on the surface, but with depths that reward closer inspection.
BEVERLY KILLS
SWEDEN
Musikens Hus – Friday 29th November
Since dropping ‘Kaleido’ in 2022, Gothenburg outfit Beverly Kills has been quietly revolutionising Swedish alternative music. Their dreamlike take on post-punk has carried them from Mexican tours to star turns at SXSW and Reeperbahn, even landing them supporting slots with Wolf Alice. Their latest single, ‘Hymn to You’, suggests even bolder horizons; Beverly Kills aren’t just participating in the conversation – they’re rewriting it entirely.
HERMAN SILOW
SWEDEN
Gathenhielmska Huset – Thursday 28th November
Following the one-two punch of ‘Förbjudna tankar’ and ‘Säkra kort’, Silow’s new EP ‘Svenska klassiker’ (out now) is a loving excavation of Swedish musical heritage. Working alongside producer Simon Karlsson, Silow weaves together threads from ABBA to dance bands to Swedish house, creating something both reverential and revolutionary. The standout track ‘Tusen år’ transforms personal loss into universal resonance, marking Silow as a masterful architect of nostalgia and innovation.
MARY SHELLEY
US
Oceanen – Thursday 28th November
Andra Långgatans Skivhandel – Friday 29th November
Hängmattan – Saturday 30th November
Brooklyn’s most gloriously unpredictable export crafts dance-ready punk that refuses to colour within the lines. This instrument-swapping collective draws from a kaleidoscopic range of influences – from IDLES to Talking Heads, Radiohead to Kendrick Lamar, Dolly Parton to Viagra Boys – creating a sound that’s perpetually in flux. Sometimes, the best way to find your place is to refuse to sit still.
RONIA
SWEDEN
Hängmattan – Saturday 30th November
From a historic house in Sweden’s Nordic woods emerges music that feels equally ancient and immediate. Singer-songwriter Ronia’s journey from her mother’s grand piano to creating surreal pop landscapes reflects influences spanning 60s psychedelia to 90s emotional depth. Despite this being her debut chapter, Ronia’s evocative songwriting has already captured attention beyond Scandinavian borders.
HANNA JÄRVER
SWEDEN
Skeppet GBG – Friday 29th November
Between the creative ferment of Örebro and the Mediterranean rhythms of Thessaloniki, Hanna Järver’s artistic DNA was forged in a crucible of cross-cultural exploration. It took a Budapest sojourn for her to discover her mother tongue was her true artistic voice – the catalyst for her first Swedish-language compositions. Her 2013 self-produced EP served as a prelude, but it was ‘Ingenting skrivet’ that carved her path through Sweden’s indie landscape.
KRISTINA ISSA
SWEDEN
Skeppet GBG – Saturday 30th November
Art pop provocateur Kristina Issa commands attention like a force of nature – her performances exist in that electric space between raw emotion and polished theatricality. With three full-length albums as her foundation, Issa has built a reputation for shows that transcend mere performance, creating moments where explosive energy meets ethereal dreamscapes. Her stage presence transforms venues from Sweden to points abroad into temporary temples of catharsis, where dancing and tears become equally valid responses to her sonic alchemy.
