Pom Pom Squad – Mirror Starts Moving Without Me

Label: City Slang Records
Released: 25th October 2024

The whimsical sheen of Pom Pom Squad’s impressive 2021 debut ‘Death of a Cheerleader’ has been wiped away on Mia Berrin’s second Squad offering and replaced with a darker sense of introspection.

This new ferocity suits her; the defiant ‘Street Fighter’ is all acerbic wit and scrappy hooks, while ‘Villain’, with its sinister gasps and exhales, pulses with a vicious energy. ‘Spinning’ demonstrates Mia’s ear for writing an indie-rock banger, and she lets her guard down on the delicately understated ‘Montauk.’

Mia co-produced this time around which allowed for more experimentation, and the triumphant disco-punk of opener ‘Downhill’ was a result of this; if ‘Mirror Starts Moving Without Me’ was born of an identity crisis, it seems Mia has defeated her inner-critic.
