David Bowie’s childhood home is set for restoration as a public heritage site

The Heritage of London Trust has acquired the childhood home of David Bowie, located at 4 Plaistow Grove, Bromley, South London.

The restoration project, expected to be completed by late 2027, aims to return the house to its early 1960s state. Curator Geoffrey Marsh, known for co-curating the Victoria and Albert Museum’s ‘David Bowie Is’ exhibition, will lead the project using an extensive archive to recreate the interior.

In addition to preserving the physical structure, the project will serve as a hub for creative workshops inspired by Bowie’s 1969 Beckenham Arts Lab.

Geoffrey Marsh comments on the significance of the home, stating: “It was in this small house, particularly in his tiny bedroom, that Bowie evolved from an ordinary suburban schoolboy to the beginnings of an extraordinary international stardom – as he said ‘I spent so much time in my bedroom. It really was my entire world. I had books up there, my music up there, my record player. Going from my world upstairs out onto the street, I had to pass through this no-man’s-land of the living room.’”

Fundraising for the project will begin in January 2026 and the project is planned to open at the end of 2027. More information can be found at bowieshouse.org.
