Since their viral debut ‘soft spot’, piri & tommy have carved out their own space in the UK’s alt-pop landscape – part dance duo, part internet-age situationship chroniclers. With ‘magic!’, they park the drum’n’bass for a bit and swerve into a glossier, funkier, Y2K-adjacent sound. It’s still loose around the edges, still full of charm, and very, very catchy.
Opener ‘someone’ is an immediate standout. As “I heard you say that you need someone” loops into oblivion, it’s bright, addictive, and emotionally light on its feet. ‘miss provocative’ keeps the flirt energy high, blending bubblegum vocals with slick, mid-00s funk-pop. There’s a bit of early solo Justin Timberlake here – think crop tops and attitude.
‘venus’ brings a more delicate touch, floating along with soft synths and barely-there percussion. ‘tom & zendaya’ earns points for title alone, but also blends romance and pop culture into their distinctly Gen-Z universe. ‘locked up’ keeps the vibe minimal but sticky – more TikTok loop than big chorus – while closer ‘magic’ reflects on relationship highs and lows in the vaguest possible terms, which somehow still works.
There’s something oddly specific about how piri & tommy write songs that feel personal but never too exposed. These tracks aren’t here to explain themselves; they just sound good. ‘magic!’ is sharp, weird, flirty and fun. Their newest phase is off to a strong start.
