Unflirt’s latest EP ‘Fleeting’ arrives swaddled in soft textures, nostalgic haze and gently held emotion; a record that doesn’t so much knock as hover politely at your door, clutching a 7″ and a homemade zine. Across seven (!) tracks, the bedroom-pop artist glides through lo-fi vignettes that nod to the beabadoobee-adjacent school of sad-sweet romance.
Opener ‘Shame’ sets the tone with hushed vocals and a fuzzed warmth that feels instantly familiar. ‘Sea Song’ and ‘Something Familiar’ follow close behind, the lines between the songs blurring somewhat. It’s cohesive, sure, but you do sometimes wish it would stop being quite so agreeable and ruffle its own fringe a bit. ‘Cut My Hair’ has a lighter, almost upbeat skip, while closer ‘Sopro’ shimmers just enough to leave a mark – soft, introspective, probably best played while journaling on a rainy bus.
It’s a strong, assured set of songs that show Unflirt knows what they’re doing. But at some point around track six, it’s hard not to glance at the tracklist and wonder if this EP has quietly become an album. Still, there’s a great four-track EP in here somewhere. Probably two, even.
