Surinamese–Dutch artist néomí has been quietly building a name for herself over the past few years, releasing a string of gentle, introspective folk-pop EPs that favour emotional depth over big production. Her latest, ‘another year will pass’, continues in that lane: six soft songs about leaving, grieving and slowly figuring out how to be on your own again.
It opens with ‘do you want to be honest’, a whisper of a track built around the simple question, “Have you forgotten how it felt to be honest with yourself?” It establishes the mood early: contemplative, emotionally exposed. ‘another year will pass’ follows in similar style, tracing the weight of moving on without ever raising its voice.
‘plugged in’ adds a flicker of light, but it’s ‘sit back baby’ that stands out most – a little brighter, a little more melodic, offering a moment of lift with the line, “Sit back baby, let it go”. Tracks like ‘the dog’ and ‘it’s never easy (leaving someone behind)’ return to the record’s main theme, picking through the slow fallout of departure. Final song ‘trigger’ closes things quietly, more of a gentle fade than a resolution.
néomí’s writing is careful and considered, often diaristic in tone, with strong lyrical moments dotted throughout. But the EP’s consistency – in sound, mood, pacing – can start to blur its emotional impact. It’s all very intimate and well-constructed, but rarely strays beyond its established frame.
Still, if you’re looking for something delicate and sad that doesn’t demand too much from you, ‘another year will pass’ makes a good companion. Just maybe not when you’re already feeling fragile.
