Nell Mescal’s second EP unfolds like a short story that’s equal parts heartbreak and hard-won clarity. Across six tracks, she traces the contours of a confusing relationship: undefined, unresolved, and ultimately unsatisfying. The result is a tightly drawn, emotionally precise record with real narrative weight.
Opener’ Middle Man’ sets the tone – sad and sharp, with lines like “You’re fucking lazy, you always were, I don’t really like you” delivered with relatable frustration. The title-track carries a more upbeat feel but is still soaked in doubt: “It’s too confusing,” she sings, as if already knowing the answer.
‘See You Again’ and ‘Lose You Altogether’ sink back into melancholy, with Nell caught in the spiral of second-guessing, while ‘Sweet Relief’ delivers the most honest blow of all: “Think I’m happier without you.” There’s no explosive breakup moment, just slow realisation and quiet release. Closer ‘Carried Away’ brings it all together – she’s not bitter, just done.
The EP’s organic instrumentation and understated arrangements really let the lyrics breathe for a masterclass in storytelling. ‘The Closest We’ll Get’ doesn’t just explore the grey areas of love; it writes its way out of them, one song at a time.
