Samia has released a new song, ‘Cinder Block’, coinciding with her ongoing North American autumn tour.
Recorded in Minneapolis a few months after the ‘Bloodless’ album sessions wrapped with regular collaborator Caleb Wright, ‘Cinder Block’ references Leonard Cohen, interpolating lines from ‘Suzanne’ and ‘Hallelujah’ across a restrained, guitar-led arrangement over its 3:45 runtime.
Discussing the song, Samia says: “This one’s sort of an extension of Bloodless – took most of it from poems and wanted it to feel like treading water. Was listening to a lot of Leonard Cohen and the Theory of Forms reference in Suzanne felt pertinent – then it just became a recurring bit in the song to quote him. Jack Sparrow’s compass only points to what the person holding it wants the most.”
Samia also recently issued a digital-only fifth anniversary edition of her debut album ‘The Baby’, featuring performances from her NPR Tiny Desk Concert alongside the original album, plus previously released covers and remixes from Bartees Strange, Palehound, Anjimile, Briston Maroney, Christian Lee Hutson and others.
