Pebbledash have released their new single ‘Tiles & Moss’, taken from their forthcoming EP ‘To Cast the Sea in Concrete’. The track arrives ahead of their run on The So Young Tour.
Recorded by Cathal MacGabhann (Altered Hours) and mixed by Andy Killian (Pretty Happy), ‘Tiles & Moss’ continues the Cork group’s blend of post-punk, shoegaze and grunge, threading atmospheric textures with an undertone of Irish folk.
Explaining the single, Cormac Donovan O’Neill says, “It was vital to us that when we brought Tiles and Moss to the studio, we would do it justice, as it’s been a stalwart of our live set for so long. As a song, we’ve always felt it’s quintessential Pebbledash, exploring so many sides of what makes up our musical DNA – the lurching, serrated texture of the guitars combined with Fionnbharr’s rapid-fire lyrical delivery recalling an Isn’t Anything-era my bloody valentine, Schuch’s pared-back drumbeat reminiscent of Sister or Daydream Nation.
“Spending four days in the studio living with these tracks encouraged us to really dig into the potential of these arrangements’ textural elements; underpinning Tiles and Moss you can hear the low hum and wheeze of a charity shop-find harmonium breathing throughout, that acoustic voice meshing in with the synthesiser, as much evoking Neu and Cluster as it does the sonorous pipes of Paddy Keenan and Liam O’Flynn.”
They add, “The song’s lyrics are done in the style of a murder balled but rather than a traditional balled of this style we took a more introspective focus trying to address self irritation or contempt and overcoming this frustration throughout the song, its a battle im sure most people are familiar with this vicious cycle of self sabotage and we articulate that struggle here!”
