Jay Som has shared ‘Cards On The Table’, the second single from forthcoming album ‘Belong’, which is set for release on 10th October via Lucky Number.
A visualiser for the track is available now, with Jay Som currently on the road in North America, supporting Lucy Dacus on select August dates withg headline shows to follow.
The project of Los Angeles-based multi-instrumentalist, songwriter and producer Melina Duterte, ‘Cards On The Table’ brings a tender, electronic pop palette with warped vocals and gentle hooks, featuring additional performance from Lexi Vega of Mini Trees. It follows the album’s lead single ‘Float (feat. Jim Adkins)’ alongside the complimentary release ‘A Million Reasons Why’.
Duterte says of the song: “‘Cards On The Table’ is my favorite song on Belong! It’s about the shifting nature of friendships and how devastating conflict can be in platonic relationships when you feel misunderstood by each other. I think it’s a universal experience to navigate that type of dynamic. It feels like a never-ending cycle of people walking in and out of your life, but it ultimately leads to self-discovery and growth.”
‘Belong’ marks Jay Som’s first album in over six years, following 2019’s ‘Anak Ko’. During that period, Duterte expanded her production and engineering work, contributing to boygenius’ GRAMMY-winning ‘the record’, Lucy Dacus’ ‘Forever Is A Feeling’, and other projects. She also joined boygenius as a touring band member, collaborated with Troye Sivan and beabadoobee with No Rome, and contributed to the I Saw the TV Glow soundtrack.
While Jay Som has traditionally been a solo endeavour, ‘Belong’ sees Duterte opening the process to collaborators. She wrote, composed, performed, produced, engineered and mixed the record, with contributions from Joao Gonzalez (Soft Glas), Mal Hauser (a collaborator to Mk.gee and Illuminati Hotties) and Steph Marziano (producer for Bartees Strange and Cassandra Jenkins). Guest vocalists appear on a Jay Som album for the first time, including Hayley Williams, Jim Adkins of Jimmy Eat World, and Lexi Vega of Mini Trees. Duterte cites early ’00s pop-punk, emo and artists synonymous with The O.C. soundtracks as touchstones; ‘Float (feat. Jim Adkins)’ was the first song written for the album.
The tracklisting for ‘Belong’ reads:
‘Cards On The Table’
