Nell Mescal has returned with new single ‘Carried Away’, her first release since signing to Atlantic Records.
The track emerges from recent recording sessions in Brooklyn, NY with producer Philip Weinrobe, known for his work with Adrianne Lenker, Billie Marten, and Cass McCombs. The sessions mark the beginning of a new direction for Mescal, incorporating folk influences.
‘Carried Away’ follows Mescal’s debut EP ‘Can I Miss It For A Minute?’ and explores themes of relationship uncertainty. “It’s a song about asking for reassurance from someone you’re in a tumultuous relationship with and being disappointed by their answer,” Mescal explains. “Instead of saying they love you back, they say they just got carried away.”
Speaking about the recording process, Mescal adds, “The demo of this vs the finished product is so different and it was so exciting to create in the studio. I played it with just me and a guitar for the band and after playing it once everyone joined in and it immediately became clear the direction we were headed in. Philip had some amazing ideas. We thought about doing a lyric change in the second pre chorus and he had the entire band play the same section over and over again while I wrote as quickly as possible…and it really elevated the song.”
“I’m beyond excited for what’s to come and this new music,” says Mescal. “I have a bunch of new tracks that I’ve just completed and will be announced very soon. I’ll be playing more festivals this summer and working on a run of headline shows for you all later in the year.”
