Shura has shared a new video for ‘America’, taken from her recently released third album ‘I Got Too Sad For My Friends’, out now via Play It Again Sam.
The video, shot on 35mm film in collaboration with filmmaker Charlotte Croft, presents a portrait of queer strength and vulnerability. The release arrives ahead of London’s Trans Pride, addressing current challenges faced by the LGBTQIA+ community.
“10 years ago I made the music video for Touch with a group of friends. It felt like an optimistic moment in time for those of us involved and for the many people who would go on to discover it. Perhaps naively, It felt that things would only continue to get better… In some ways that is true, we have more queer representation in film and music than we had in 2014.
“That being said, the world we live in now feels very different and it is not the world I imagined this song would land in when I wrote it 5 years ago,” Shura explains. “So my friend Charlotte and I set out to make a video that reflects the moment we find ourselves in – with the same spirit we approached the video for Touch – with a queer cast, queer friends and a majority queer crew, we decided to create something beautiful.”
‘I Got Too Sad For My Friends’, produced by Luke Smith, features collaborations with Cassandra Jenkins, Becca Mancari, and Helado Negro. The album follows Shura’s previous works ‘Nothing’s Real’ (2016) and ‘forevher’ (2019).
