Shame have announced their fourth album ‘Cutthroat’, set for release on 5th September via Dead Oceans, alongside sharing the title-track’s new video.
The London band’s new record was produced by Grammy winner John Congleton, known for his work with St. Vincent. The album’s lead single arrives with visuals directed by Ja Humby, featuring the band performing within a motorcycle wall of death.
“It’s about the cowards, the cunts, the hypocrites,” vocalist Charlie Steen explains of the new record. “Let’s face it, there’s a lot of them around right now.”
The five-piece – comprising Steen, guitarists Sean Coyle-Smith and Eddie Green, bassist Josh Finerty and drummer Charlie Forbes – worked with Congleton to develop their sound, incorporating electronic elements into their established framework. “This time, anything could go if it sounded good and you got it right,” Coyle-Smith says.
Steen reveals the album’s lyrical inspiration came from Oscar Wilde’s works, noting, “I was reading a lot of Oscar Wilde plays where everything was about paradox. In ‘Cutthroat’, it’s that whole idea from Lady Windermere’s Fan, ‘Life’s far too important to be taken seriously’.”
The band will perform the album in full at a sold-out show at London’s Brixton Jamm on 4th June, before embarking on an extensive tour later this year.
