shortstraw. – AKA Erin West – has shared details about the meaning behind latest track ‘Dot Cotton’, discussing British pop culture references and personal experiences.
The artist explains the song’s themes of UK cultural touchstones, including references to EastEnders character Dot Cotton and musician Calvin Harris, alongside personal anecdotes about a Ford Fiesta and experiences at raves. The track explores themes of past behaviour and its consequences.
“This song is reflecting on all things ‘uk pop culture’ as it references dot cotton, calvin harris, my ford fiesta falling apart and expressing my love for raves whilst simultaneously looking back on doing anything for a laugh and everyone finding it funny until it all goes west combined with not knowing when to say no,” shortstraw. explains.
“I feel like I’ve always wanted to slip Dot Cotton or Pat Butcher’s name into a song and as I was writing this song the rhyme just fell into place with the context,” they continue. “Dot cotton was a gorgeous girl and them wrinkles sure did run deep.”
If you’re at The Great Escape this weekend, you’ll be able to see shortstraw. open up Dork’s Saturday stage from 7:15pm at Charles Street Tap.
