Liverpool’s DBA! burst through the speakers like your favourite house party caught on tape, delivering a debut EP that feels both wonderfully unhinged and cleverly calculated. ‘skip! worried’ packs five tracks of guitar-fuelled urgency that dance right on the edge of combustion without ever losing their footing.
‘sinkorswim’ kicks things off with the gleeful abandon of FIDLAR’s best moments, all scrappy determination and earworm hooks. The triumvirate of Sam Warren, Jamie Lindberg, and Josh Grant display an almost supernatural grasp of when to hold back and when to hurl themselves headlong into the fray. ‘Whisky’ follows, nodding respectfully to Blur’s ‘Beetlebum’ before carving its own path through Warren’s distinctive vocals and Grant’s guitar gymnastics.
By the time ‘Hands Now!’ crashes in, the band’s aggressive tendencies have found their perfect match in arrangements that know a thing or two about controlled demolition. ‘The Medicine’ pulls back the throttle without dampening the spirit, and the EP wraps up with ‘D.P.D.’, introducing twangy textures that expand their musical vocabulary further still.
Throughout, the production walks a tightrope between refinement and rawness, capturing every ounce of energy while keeping each element precisely placed. This is the sound of a band discovering their superpowers, and watching them flex these newfound muscles is properly exciting. ‘skip! worried’ introduces DBA! as a group with genuine heart and the musical muscle to back it up.
