The Great Escape will this year host a ‘SSR from Tokyo: Curated by FRIENDSHIP.’ showcase, set to take place at One Church, Brighton on 16th May.
The gig, which aims to bridge the indie music scenes of Japan and the UK, features four acts from Tokyo’s vibrant indie music scene: The fin., She Her Her Hers, VivaOla, and Ålborg.
FRIENDSHIP. founder Kazuto Yamazaki explains the showcase’s origins: “As the founder of FRIENDSHIP., a digital music distribution service, I started our showcase event ‘SSR (SHIBUYA SOUND RIVERSE)’ in 2022 with one goal in mind—to preserve the warmth and human connection of analog music, even in today’s digital age. SSR was created as a way for people to experience the core of Japan’s indie scene and to give artists and listeners a space to connect directly and meaningfully.”
The fin., who have previously spent time based in the UK, are returning following performances at FUJI ROCK, SXSW, and Strawberry Festival in China. “Last time we played, we were blown away by the atmosphere of the city and the festival itself. It really stayed with us,” says Yuto Uchino from the band.
The showcase runs from 12pm to 4pm, with She Her Her Hers performing at 12:30pm, VivaOla at 1:30pm, Ålborg at 2:30pm, and The fin. at 3:30pm.
