Lorde has returned with her first solo release in four years, sharing new single ‘What Was That’.
The New Zealand-born artist’s latest track features reflective lyrics about a past relationship, set against minimal instrumentation including a bassline, light percussion and synth elements. The song’s narrative explores themes of nostalgia and personal growth, with Lorde examining a long-term relationship through her characteristically detailed songwriting.
‘What Was That’ arrives following a series of hints about new material, including Lorde clearing her social media accounts at the end of last year. The track was first announced on 16th April, with Lorde subsequently previewing the song for fans at Washington Square Park in New York.
Prior to the single’s release, Lorde shared a voice note with fans after making an appearance during Charli XCX’s Coachella set, saying: “I just wanted to say hi because everything is about to change. These are really the last moments where it’s just us, which is crazy. It’s so right. I’m so ready. I didn’t know if I’d ever be able to say that, but I am. I’m so thankful for your patience. I’ve felt your love, I’ve felt you right there. This is going to be crazy, you have no idea.”
The track follows Lorde’s previous albums ‘Pure Heroine’ (2013), ‘Melodrama’ (2017), and ‘Solar Power’ (2021).
