Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter Jensen McRae masterfully balances nostalgic warmth with sharp contemporary observations, and with ‘I Don’t Know How But They Found Me!’, she delivers a record that’s both timeless and perfectly timed.
From the first notes of ‘The Rearranger’, she proves herself a storyteller who can turn a microscope on the minutiae of daily life until they become epic in scope. Her voice – equal parts velvet and vulnerability – weaves through the pristine production with remarkable precision.
The album hits its stride just two songs in with ‘I Can Change Him’, a track that could have soundtracked any classic top of the box office romantic comedy from the 90s, carrying enough emotional weight to sink a battleship. It’s in these moments where McRae’s storytelling truly shines.
‘Savannah’ once again showcases her narrative prowess, while ‘Let Me Be Wrong’ demonstrates how McRae can transform melancholy into catharsis. When she delivers the devastating line “It was just Tuesday to you” on the aptly named ‘Tuesday’, it lands like a punch to the gut – the kind of lyric that makes you pause the album just to process it.
The record is a perfect example of how McRae has evolved as an artist – maintaining her observational skills while adding new layers of musical sophistication. Working with producer Brad Cook (Bon Iver, Waxahatchee), she’s found a sweet spot between indie folk intimacy and pop accessibility, never sacrificing authenticity for appeal.
