Self-titled record ‘Superheaven’ marks the band’s first full-length LP in a decade, following a long-endured hiatus by fans. It opens with a supersonic dreamscape of sound as ‘Humans for Toys” dark lyrics and droning distortion catapult listeners back into the band’s gloomy headspace.
There is a deft 90s influence throughout, with this record sonically encapsulating the decade in all its grungy glory. ‘Long Gone’ feels huge, bringing a commanding presence deliciously layered with swaggering basslines and striking hooks. ‘Hot Head’ bares all the frantic vigour of its title with scrappy punk instrumentals and hurtling energy, but as the shortest track clocks in at a minute and a half, it leaves you hungry for more. ‘The Curtain’ closes the album with a moody haze of shoegaze, bright flashes of guitar striking across the airways with an unrestrained brilliance.
The band allow time for each member to shine, instruments balanced in a harmony of silent understanding; despite the volume and intensity, one does not overwhelm the other. The percussion is crisp, the melodies dreamy, and the exchange between the two lead vocalists, Jake Clarke and Taylor Madison, smoothly interwoven. ‘Superheaven’ is an atmospheric album full of late-night angst. A stellar return to the scene.
