Pulp have announced their first album in 24 years, and shared new single ‘Spike Island’

Pulp have announced their first new album in 24 years, with ‘More’ set to arrive via Rough Trade Records on 6th June.

The Sheffield band recorded the album at Orbb Studio in Walthamstow with producer James Ford (Arctic Monkeys, Fontaines DC). The record features string arrangements from Richard Jones performed by the Elysian Collective, with the Eno family providing backing vocals on one track.

“This is the first Pulp album since ‘We Love Life’ in 2001. Yes: the first Pulp album for 24 years,” Jarvis Cocker explains. “When we started touring again in 2023, we practiced a new song called ‘Hymn of the North’ during soundchecks & eventually played it at the end of our second night at Sheffield Arena. This seemed to open the floodgates: we came up with the rest of the songs on this album during the first half of 2024.”

The band have shared the first single from the record, ‘Spike Island’, co-written with Jason Buckle. The track was inspired by Buckle’s experience at the Stone Roses’ infamous Spike Island gig, where a DJ repeatedly shouted “Spike Island, come alive!” throughout the day.

Speaking about the track’s video, Cocker adds: “It was my initial idea to produce a kind of ‘making of’ video that showed how the photos had come to be taken – but as soon as I fed the first shot into the A.I. app I realised that wasn’t going to happen. So I decided to ‘go with the flow’ & see where the computer led me.”

The album will be available in various vinyl editions, including a double LP cut at 45rpm exclusive to Pulp’s online shop and Rough Trade Records’ webstore. Additional variants include ‘Theresa’ green, ‘Blue Sky Thinking’ marble, ‘South Yorkshire Sunset’ marble, and ‘Isha Kriya’ ink spot designs.
