Brooklyn quartet Momma’s ‘Welcome to My Blue Sky’ doesn’t just nod to the golden age of alternative rock; it gives it a thoroughly modern makeover – like if The Breeders discovered TikTok but somehow made it work.
Opening with the warm analogue embrace of ‘Sincerely’, the album sets off like a road trip with no particular destination but plenty of snacks. It’s when ‘I Want You (Fever)’ kicks in that things really catch fire – all assertive riffs and 90s swagger that wouldn’t feel out of place on MTV’s Alternative Nation, if that was still a thing.
The record ebbs and flows with careful precision. ‘Rodeo’ drifts into dreamy shoegaze territory, while ‘New Friend’ strips things back to reveal the vulnerability beneath the distortion. This push-and-pull dynamic showcases Etta Friedman and Allegra Weingarten’s growing confidence as songwriters, even as they document a summer of emotional turbulence.
The middle section, including ‘How To Breathe’, deliberately slows the pace, like the quiet moment at a house party when everyone’s sitting on the kitchen floor having deep conversations. But just when you think you’ve settled into this mellower groove, ‘Ohio All The Time’ arrives to shake things up again, leading into the nostalgic rush of the title-track.
By the time we reach the mournful ‘Take Me With You’ and closer ‘My Old Street’, Momma have proven they’re more than just revivalists – they’re storytellers who happen to speak fluent grunge. While not every track hits with equal force (a few middle numbers blend together like memories from that same chaotic summer), there’s enough genuine emotion and clever songcraft here to suggest this band aren’t just remembering the past – they’re building something new from its foundations.
