The term ‘country baroque’ might sound like a contradiction, but on ‘Till the Morning’, Brian D’Addario makes it feel as natural as breathing. The elder Lemon Twigs brother has crafted a debut solo album that walks the tightrope between ornate chamber pop arrangements and earthy American folk with remarkable poise.
D’Addario’s classical guitar training shines through in the precise fingerpicking and layered arrangements, yet there’s nothing stuffy about these songs. ‘Nothing On My Mind’ bounces along with infectious energy despite its melancholic underpinnings, while ‘Only To Ease My Mind’ demonstrates his gift for delicate composition.
The album’s recording process – spanning intimate 8-track sessions in New York to collaborative efforts in LA – lends these songs a compelling variety of textures. ‘This Summer’ emerges as a particular standout, its deceptively bright melody masking darker currents beneath.
When D’Addario lets his wit loose on ‘Useless Tears’, complete with its dramatic string opening, the result is both clever and genuinely affecting. It’s this balance between technical proficiency and emotional resonance that makes ‘Till the Morning’ work so well. Even when things venture into sweeter, more precious territory – as on the title-track – there’s usually an unexpected element to keep things interesting.
Some may find the more baroque flourishes a touch overwrought, but this is a minor quibble in what is ultimately a remarkably assured solo debut. ‘Till the Morning’ rewards those willing to spend time exploring its many corners.
