Polly Money’s debut EP begins with a confession. Not the whispered-in-a-dimly-lit-room kind, but the sort that sparkles and shimmers across five tracks of pristine indie-pop. Fresh from arena tours with The 1975, Money could have easily gone big and bombastic. Instead, ‘T-Shirt Nothing Else’ turns inward, creating something that feels like a late-night conversation with your most honest friend – if that friend happened to be exceptionally gifted at crafting perfect pop hooks.
‘Milk & Honey’ arrives first, all vintage synthesiser warmth exploring queer romance with the kind of earnestness that makes your heart squeeze. ‘i’m not proud’ follows like sunshine breaking through clouds, its upbeat indie-pop wrapping vulnerability in a summer-ready melody that lodges itself in your brain.
It’s on ’30 Minutes’ where Money really shows her hand, though. “Guilty conscience,” she admits, wrestling with being the antagonist in her own narrative. It’s the kind of raw honesty that makes you wince and nod in recognition simultaneously.
The title-track ‘T-Shirt’ strips everything back to its bones, revealing Money’s songwriting at its most affecting. ‘Anything’ rounds things off with breezy charm, though its lightweight surface belies the emotional intelligence underneath. Yes, there are echoes of those arena nights with The 1975, but she’s crafted something entirely her own.
What makes this EP special is Money’s willingness to let us see the workings out, the crossed-out lines, the moments of doubt and triumph. It’s an invitation into her world, complete with all its beautiful contradictions.
