C Turtle have shared new single ‘2001’, their first release since 2024’s ‘Expensive Thrills’ album.
The track sees the London band blend Noughties pop elements with their signature analogue sound, featuring vocal interplay between Cole Quirke and Mimiko McVeigh. The single is backed with a cover of The Magnetic Fields’ ‘When You’re Old And Lonely’ as its B-side.
“2001 was originally a song I wrote for my first band ‘Honey Creeper’ before Covid. It never really developed much in that group but I thought it would fit the direction that C Turtle is going in. We tried it out and loved it – I can’t really remember what intentions I had with it when I first wrote it but when we play it now it reminds me of being a kid; things like getting my first skateboard, Lord of the Rings coming out, watching Cartoon Network and playing out scenes from Dragon Ball Z with my brother – so the playfulness of this song feels nostalgic to me and represents memories of an easier time. Mimiko was born in 2001 so there’s that too,” says Quirke.
The band, which began as Quirke’s solo project before meeting McVeigh on a shoot, have expanded their lineup to include Jimmy Jackson on drums, Frank Livesey on bass, and Mack Kniese on keys and synth. Kniese joins as a full-time member after producing ‘Expensive Thrills’ at Abbey Road.
