Where Miya Folick’s previous work hinted at deeper waters, ‘Erotica Veronica’ dives headfirst into the depths of desire, identity, and the exquisite pain of self-discovery. The decision to self-produce alongside Sam KS proves inspired, lending the album an immediacy that crackles through every track.
Opening with the title-track ‘Erotica’, Folick wastes no time establishing the record’s fearless approach to examining sexuality and power dynamics. Her voice – always her most potent instrument – takes on new dimensions, shifting from intimate whispers to full-throated declarations with devastating effect.
The guitar-driven arrangements mark a decisive shift from her earlier work, on tracks like ‘Fist’ and ‘This Time Around’ especially, and there’s a warmth that feels almost tactile. The contributions from collaborators, including Meg Duffy and Waylon Rector, add textural complexity without ever overwhelming Folick’s central vision.
What’s most impressive about ‘Erotica Veronica’ is how it manages to be both a bold artistic statement and an incredibly listenable collection of songs. It represents an artist operating at the height of her powers, crafting the kind of joyful, reassuring, uplifting album that reminds us why we fall in love with music in the first place.
