Impossible to pin down, Annie-Dog’s debut EP ’15’ is delightfully unruly. Opening track ‘What Happened.’ lives up to its questioning title, throwing listeners into a carefully constructed chaos of layered vocals and clashing electronic elements that coalesce into something hypnotic.
Our Dublin-based experimentalist treats genre boundaries like suggested serving sizes – mere recommendations to be cheerfully ignored. Take ‘the feeling in my fingertips’, where late-night dance floor energy meets the intimate confessions of bedroom pop, creating something that wouldn’t feel out of place soundtracking either your existential crisis or your kitchen disco.
The collection’s crown jewel, ‘please forgive me, david gray’, showcases both Annie-Dog’s playful wit and her gift for transformative homage. It’s this kind of personal touch that elevates ’15’ beyond simple genre exercises, the song itself managing to both honour and reimagine its inspiration, creating something entirely new in the process.
The bouncy ‘Little Italy’ wraps things up with the EP’s most radio-friendly moment, though calling it accessible feels like missing the point entirely. Throughout ’15’, Annie-Dog seems far more interested in exploring pop’s negative space, finding gold in the gaps.
What we’re witnessing here is an artist’s evolution in real-time, catching Annie-Dog at that perfect sweet spot where technical prowess meets reckless creativity. ’15’ might not be flawless, but its imperfections sparkle with possibility, marking the arrival of a creator who knows exactly how to break the rules that matter.
