Luke Sital-Singh’s ‘Fool’s Spring’ is a bit like a therapy session that’s gone off the tracks, set to gentle folk arrangements.
The London-born, LA-seasoned songwriter has always worn his heart on his sleeve, and when it works, like on the standout track ‘Hold the Lightning’, it really works. The song builds from tender folk foundations into something more profound, with audaciously astute lyrics like “I wonder how it feels to burn alive” hitting you like an unexpected plot twist in a period drama.
‘In Your Eyes’ aims for what Sital-Singh describes as “Sad Abba” territory and somehow manages to stick the landing. It’s introspective without being indulgent, soaring without losing its footing. Think ‘The Winner Takes It All’, but make it indie and add a dash of existential crisis.
‘Firefight’, meanwhile, dips so deep into melancholy that it makes Morrissey look like a motivational speaker. The talent is undeniable, but you sometimes wish Sital-Singh would trust his rawer instincts rather than polishing every emotion until it gleams.
For those seeking thoughtfully crafted folk with a side of emotional intelligence, ‘Fool’s Spring’ delivers. Others might find themselves wishing for more moments where the heart leads, and the head follows.
