Irish singer-songwriter Annika Kilkenny has released her new EP ‘Me In The Mud’, alongside focus track ‘Tango’.
The new EP, produced by Ant Whiting and co-written with Emily Phillips, documents a period of transformation in young adulthood. The project moves from feelings of stagnation through to self-discovery, with ‘Tango’ serving as a key moment in the collection.
“It was really fun to string together,” Kilkenny says of ‘Tango’. “I remember being in my room finding all these James-Bond-type chords and thinking about how I could something quite moody with them. The idiom ‘the ball is in your court’ drove the lyrical concept for this song with how the verses embody a back-and-forth, my-move-your-move motif. Only later did this inspire the title of the track to be dubbed the name of the fiery latin dance.”
Speaking about the EP’s broader themes, Kilkenny adds, “you should allow your experiences to mould you into a better version of yourself, allow yourself to take guidance from people you trust but disregard other comments or critiques sent your way from people you wouldn’t go to for advice.”
The Co. Kilkenny native has previously supported Laufey in London, alongside performances with James Vincent McMorrow, Pillow Queens and Aimee Carty on the Irish live circuit. The EP follows recent singles ‘It’s Shaped You’, ‘Look Mom I Made It’, and ‘Out In The Garden’.
