Dua Lipa has shared a tribute following Duolingo’s announcement of their mascot’s “death”.
The language learning app took to social media on 11th February to announce that their green owl mascot, Duo, had died unexpectedly. In their statement, they noted that authorities were investigating the cause of death, making light-hearted references to inactive users and the mascot’s notorious persistence in reminding people to complete their language lessons.
“It is with heavy hearts that we inform you that Duo, formally known as The Duolingo Owl, is dead,” the company wrote. “Authorities are currently investigating his cause of death and we are cooperating fully.”
Lipa, who has previously discussed her special connection with the mascot due to their similar names, responded to the announcement on social media, writing: “Til’ death duo part.”
A Duolingo spokesperson elaborated on the campaign in a statement to E!, saying: “For years, he tirelessly reminded millions to do their language lessons—sometimes with gentle nudges, sometimes with sheer, unhinged persistence. But even the most relentless of birds can only take so much. Our app icon reflects this tragic loss with ‘Dead Duo’.”
The spokesperson added that they would be working to “uncover the shocking (and possibly absurd) truth behind his untimely demise.”
