Alessia Cara – Love & Hyperbole

Label:  Def Jam Recordings
Released: 14th February 2025

Remember when Alessia Cara was the voice of introvert anthems? The Canadian singer-songwriter has grown up, stepped out, and delivered her most ambitious work to date. ‘Love & Hyperbole’ marks a creative rebirth after what Cara describes as a period of fog, emerging with a collection that’s both more organic and more adventurous than her previous work. The lush instrumentation throughout creates a warm, analogue embrace that wraps around her characteristically honest lyrics like a well-worn leather jacket.

Lead single ‘(Isn’t It) Obvious’ showcases this evolution perfectly, with John Mayer’s guest guitar work weaving through. It’s the kind of song that would sound equally at home on a late-night playlist between Suki Waterhouse and Maggie Rogers.

But for all its polish and mature sound, ‘Love & Hyperbole’ never loses the refreshing candour that made us fall for Cara in the first place. The album explores duality with the kind of thoughtful introspection that feels earned rather than affected.

Not every experiment lands perfectly, but when it does, it works – ‘Dead Man’ in particular packing a certain swagger. There’s something undeniably compelling about watching an artist who made her name evolve into someone who’s confidently pushing at the boundaries of her sound. ‘Love & Hyperbole’ might not be the album that wins over new converts to the Church of Cara, but it’s a bold statement from an artist who’s more interested in creative growth than playing it safe.
