Memories don’t always fade. In Coupdekat’s hands, they’re something altogether more digital – compressed, reformatted, stored away in metaphorical hard drives that power ‘the world she created / inside of her pocket*’, an EP that turns teenage reflection into pristine binary code pop.
Opening track ‘cdjs’ crashes straight into this theme with its clever data metaphors (“I’ve run out of storage in my mind”), before ‘Xxxx’ bounces through the dancefloor with all the euphoric energy of her LOUD LDN pals piri & tommy, managing to dissect online relationships without ever feeling like a lecture.
The conversational ‘soda pop!’ brings things closer to home, its distinctly British stream-of-consciousness perfectly capturing the spiral of anxious thoughts, while ‘pages (rewritten)*’ cracks open the diary to expose the beautiful mess of young love in all its glory.
By the time ‘pocket locket*’ rolls around to close proceedings, Coupdekat has mastered the art of hiding weightier themes about identity inside sugar-rush melodies that refuse to leave your head. It’s bedroom pop that’s grown beyond its four walls without losing its heart.
