Patrick Wolf has announced his seventh studio album ‘Crying The Neck’, alongside sharing new single ‘Dies Irae’.
The album, Wolf’s first in thirteen years, features collaborations with Zola Jesus, Serafina Steer, drummer Seb Rochford and Wolf’s sister Jo Apps. It forms the first part of a planned four-album series.
‘Dies Irae’, which translates from Latin as “the day of wrath”, explores themes of mortality and familial love. “I wanted to write a response to that idea, seeing it instead as an affirmation of life in the last days of knowing you are about to lose someone you love, and a courageous – almost rebellious – choice against the misery to use the time remaining to deepen your love or joy with each other,” Wolf explains. “I finished the lyrics as an imaginary last conversation with my mother in her art studio and out to the garden as the evening falls.”
Written and recorded in Ramsgate, Kent, ‘Crying The Neck’ draws inspiration from local folklore, the East Kentish landscape, and Wolf’s personal experiences. The album was entirely written, composed, produced and arranged by Wolf, with Brendan Cox joining as co-producer and engineer in the final three years of production.
The album sees Wolf returning to instruments from his early career, including the viola, Appalachian dulcimer, baritone ukulele, kantale, and Atari. The thirteen-track record includes the opener ‘Reculver’, a song Wolf began writing at age 16, alongside new material inspired by Kent’s landscape and folklore.
