Swimming against the tide of expectation can be treacherous business. On ‘Burnout Days’, flipturn have traded their sun-kissed Florida roots for murkier waters, though they’re finding the deep end more challenging than anticipated.
Opening track ‘Juno’ starts proceedings with sparkling synths and measured percussion hinting at hidden depths, while Dillon Basse’s vocals hover elegantly in the mix. ‘Sunlight’ demonstrates their gift for melody, while ‘Tides’ weaves an intricate tapestry. There’s technical accomplishment to spare throughout ‘Burnout Days’, but every element blends so seamlessly that the whole affair risks becoming musical wallpaper.
‘Right?’ is perhaps the best example of the band letting loose a little with the “grit and bite” they teased would find a home on this record, however these flashes of brilliance often dissolve into safer currents, smoothed over to favour comfort over confrontation. There’s undeniable talent swirling in these waters; if flipturn can fine tune their marriage of light and shadow, they could be onto something special.
