Any Other (Festive) Questions with… Wallice

Yes, Dear Reader. We enjoy those ‘in depth’ interviews as much as anyone else. But – BUT – we also enjoy the lighter side of music, too. We simply cannot go on any longer without knowing that Wallice would teleport to any beach in the world but still wants to sleep in her own bed (relatable), makes vintage-inspired pipe cleaner Christmas dolls after watching TikTok tutorials (crafty!), and once received a completely empty picture frame as a gift because it “reminded someone of her” (we have questions).

What did you last dream about?

I don’t really remember my dreams usually. But I feel like the last dream I can remember is me trying to hire a crew for my upcoming tour, so nothing too exciting, haha.

If you won the lottery, what would you spend the cash on?

This got me thinking that even if I won like $100k, it would be so sick! I would pay off my car and my mom’s and any debt we have. Then, if I won the big bucks, I would buy a reasonable house and another one down the street for my mom.

What’s the weirdest thing you’ve ever eaten?

In Japan, I have eaten rare chicken and enjoyed it.

Do you have a favourite Christmas movie, and if so, which one is it?

Elf is my go-to.

Have you ever seen a ghost?

I don’t think so, but I believe in them for sure.

Who were you in your school’s nativity play?

I don’t know; that might be a British or private school thing because I don’t remember my schools ever having that, and I only went to public school.

What was the first record you bought?

I’m going to guess *Born to Die* by Lana Del Rey (physical vinyl-wise). But there’s a chance the ‘Blue Album’ by Weezer was the first record I purchased on iTunes, and I also remember I bought the *Fergalicious* music video on my iPod when I was little.

If you could have a superpower of your choosing, what would it be?

Teleportation sounds really cool because then I could go to any beach I want at any time, or I could travel anywhere in the world and still sleep in my own bed.

Do you have any homemade Christmas decorations?

My friend and I made these vintage-inspired pipe cleaner Christmas dolls that I saw a TikTok about, and they turned out so cute! I might make another one this year.

What do you always have in your refrigerator during Christmas?

I love making apple pies, so it’s great having leftover pie or leftovers in general for the days following Christmas.

If you could choose anyone in the world to do a Secret Santa with, who would you pick, and what would you get them?

Lana Del Rey, and I would give her a ceramic vase that I made.

What’s the weirdest Christmas gift you’ve ever received?

An extended family member gave me a small, plain, blank-white picture frame with nothing in it and said, “I saw this and thought of you”. I still don’t know what that means — not sure if I should be insulted or not, haha.

If you were tasked with creating a new holiday tradition, what would it be, and how would you convince others to adopt it?

Government-mandated Secret Santa.

What would you most like to find in your Christmas stocking?

Sonny Angels, chocolate, and nice socks.

What is your earliest memory?

When I was 4, I remember being in SeaWorld and seeing the orcas. I thought it was the one in San Diego, California (a 2-hour drive from where I grew up), but then I looked at the photos, and everyone was Japanese, and all the signs were in Japanese, so it turns out I went to the Tokyo SeaWorld, and I’ve never been to the San Diego location.

If you had to get a tattoo today, what would it be of?

I don’t have any tattoos, and I’m constantly going back and forth on whether I want some because I think they are really cool, but I also love using onsens in Japan, and they don’t allow tattoos. There’s this artist in Australia named Megumi who does these vintage lighters with ornate geishas on them. They are a beautiful modern take on old-style Japanese art.

If you were to design your own ugly Christmas jumper, what would it look like?

I would put a big 3D knit dog head (my dog, Baby) in the middle, wearing a Christmas hat, with Christmas lights around the head that actually light up.

Do you believe in aliens?

I think so; I think, why not?

What was the last thing you broke?

I can’t remember what I broke, but my dog knocked over a bowl and the TV, so I didn’t break those, but I had to clean them up.

What’s your idea of the perfect Christmas morning breakfast?

I’m not usually a breakfast-food person, but I do think some sausage/bacon with scrambled eggs and hashbrowns is the move on Christmas morning.

If you could time travel, which historical era would you like to spend Christmas in?

Not sure about a historical era, but I would like to go back to when I was like 5, and the magic of Christmas and Santa still fascinated me.

What’s the biggest thing you can jump over?

Maybe a chair? But I also rock climb, so technically I sometimes jump on or off the wall, which is like 4 meters tall.

If you could learn one skill instantly, without needing to practice, what would you pick?

Tie between glassblowing, metalsmith/jewelrysmith, and being a mechanic on cars.

What’s the best part of a Christmas dinner?

Maybe my number one is mashed potatoes and gravy, but it needs to be a full spread plate of usually roast chicken, mac and cheese, and green beans too.

What’s your biggest fear?

I’m not a huge fan of bugs, but I can also deal with them. Existentially, it would be not being good enough or not succeeding to the level of success I want.

What’s the most creative way you’ve ever wrapped a Christmas present?

I used a paper grocery bag and drew on it.

When was the last time you were late, and what was your excuse?

…I’m almost always late. I truly don’t know what’s wrong with me, but I’m usually 10 minutes late. My last excuse was traffic, which is an easy one for LA.

If you could bring something extinct back to life, what would you choose?

Rather than bringing a completely extinct species, I would try to save the orangutans from their near extinction.

Santa’s reindeer are on vacation, and you need to choose new animals to pull his sleigh. Which animals would you pick, and why?

My dog Baby/pit bulls in general because they are so strong. But also horses (with wings but not unicorns) are probably the most realistic answer.

What’s one thing you’ve always wanted to try?

I want to skydive one day.

Which supermarket do you shop at?

I like to shop at the Japanese / Korean markets here, but I also find myself needing to go to Trader Joe’s for some things. American supermarkets are so different to British ones, and I don’t ever know what to buy at the British ones.

What do you put on the top of your Christmas tree?

I put my handmade doll on top last year, but I just saw a disco ball Christmas topper at the store that I might go back for.

If you had to hide something so nobody ever found it, where would you hide it?

I’d probably bury it somewhere off a hiking path, but there’s a good chance someone would find it one day.

How punk are you out of ten?

3/10. Not punk, but Avril Lavigne was my first concert.

What’s the best thing to find in a Christmas cracker?

I’ve only done these at my British uncle’s house; they aren’t really an American tradition, but I love them. I feel like I have a memory of someone getting tiny playing cards in one, and that’s what I would want.

What’s your stance on regifting, and have you ever done it?

I am a huge fan of returning gifts in that if I got something for someone and they wanted something else at the store or a different size or colour, I would much rather them exchange or return it than just sit with it and not love it. So, I guess that’s similar to regifting. I think I’ve regifted a nice candle because I do love candles but didn’t have a gift ready to go, so I just did that.

If you could invite any three fictional characters to your Christmas dinner, who would they be, and what would you serve them?

Edward Cullen, Robert Pattinson’s rendition of Batman, and his character in *The Lighthouse*. I would roast a chicken and make mashed potatoes and gravy, mac and cheese, charred cabbage, and apple pie. I don’t think those people would care for the food I made, but I would eat it.

What is the most irrational superstition you have?

I don’t know if I have any superstitions. Maybe that if you have too smooth of a soundcheck, the show will be bad, or if you have a bad soundcheck, you’ll have a great show, but I don’t know if that’s an actual superstition.

Why are you like this?

I am half Japanese but was raised by a strong single hippy mother in Topanga, California, and I think that sums it up.

Taken from the December 2024 / January 2025 issue of Dork. Wallice’s debut album ‘The Jester’ is out now.
