With her second EP ‘Bloom’, aimei 媚 invites us into a world where raw emotion and finely tuned electronic production meet in a perfectly balanced dance. Born in Beijing and raised between China and the UK, her sound draws from a rich cultural mix that makes her music feel like a quiet storm – both tender and commanding at once. From her latest single ‘Dark Arts’ landing on BBC Radio 1’s playlist to a string of sold-out London shows, it’s clear that aimei 媚’s ability to craft deeply personal yet relatable tracks has resonated with a growing audience.
‘Bloom’ builds on the success of her debut EP ‘City’s Violent’, but this time around, there’s a stronger sense of introspection and emotional release. Whether it’s the soothing yet loaded quiet of ‘Breathe’ or the stormy heartache of ‘Dark Arts’, each track offers an intimate look at her thoughts and experiences, blending traditional songwriting with modern electronic twists.
Here, aimei 媚 breaks down each track on ‘Bloom’, offering us a glimpse into the creative process and emotions that shaped this release.
Breathe
‘Breathe’ is all about that crazy feeling of silence—how it can be both soothing yet packed with emotions at the same time. As someone who often feels anxious, I’ve learned to come back to my breath to find a little peace when things get overwhelming. This song is my reminder that it’s okay to sit with discomfort and find comfort in it.
Need U
In ‘Need U,’ I reflect on the bittersweet reality of moving around a lot as a kid. It was tough to keep friendships, and I often find myself reminiscing about old friends and the memories we shared. This song is a heartfelt tribute to everyone who’s touched my life, reminding me that even with distance, those connections linger on.
Dark Arts
‘Dark Arts’ is my way of expressing the magnetic pull of a toxic relationship that can feel like black magic. I poured my feelings of desperation for closure into this song, and I think it strikes a chord with anyone who’s been in a similar situation. It’s a personal journey that speaks to a universal struggle, reminding us of the complexities of love and loss.
Bloom
The day I wrote ‘Bloom’ was one of those miserable London summer days when the weather was just awful. I almost didn’t want to be in the studio, but surprisingly, the song flowed out of me so naturally, almost like it was hiding in my subconscious, revealing my feelings without me even realising it! It became a symbol of hope and tied the EP together perfectly. It’s a heartfelt chat with myself about growth, flaws, and a sense of gratitude.
