Geordie Greep – The New Sound

Label: Rough Trade Records
Released: 4th October 2024

Geordie Greep’s ‘The New Sound’ is, in not entirely unexpected fashion, a kaleidoscopic journey that defies genre boundaries.

The now-presumably-former black midi man’s solo debut weaves jazz, prog, and several kitchen sinks into a bewildering tapestry. A whole slew musicians contribute to this ambitious project, with half the tracks recorded in Brazil, lending authentic flair to its Latin-influenced numbers. Greep’s distinctive vocals and character-driven narratives shine throughout, from the sardonic opener ‘Blues’ – with its talk of gigantic willies and endless rivers of jizz – to the epic ‘The Magician’.

While potentially overwhelming for some, the album rewards more adventurous travellers with moments of brilliance. It’s messy, it’s audacious, and it’s utterly, gloriously alive. Down with boring indeed.
