Former One Direction star Liam Payne is reported to have died at the age of 31, according to state police in Argentina.
The English singer reportedly fell from the third floor of his hotel room at the CasaSur in Palermo, where he was staying.
Alberto Crescenti, head of the state emergency medical system, provided details about the incident on Argentina’s Todo Noticias TV channel. He stated that Payne fell into a courtyard of the Casa Sur Hotel in the trendy Palermo neighborhood of Argentina’s capital.
Crescenti said: “At 17.04 we were alerted through 911 about a person who was in the inner courtyard of the Casa Azul hotel. A few minutes later [an] emergency team arrived and confirmed the death of this man who we later learned was from a musical group. He had injuries incompatible with life as a result of his fall. There was no way to do anything.”
The exact circumstances of his fall are still under investigation
Liam James Payne was born on August 29, 1993, in Wolverhampton, England. He first auditioned for The X Factor in 2008 at the age of 14 but was encouraged by Simon Cowell to return in two years. In 2010, Payne auditioned again and was eventually placed in a group with Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson, and Zayn Malik.
One Direction went on to become one of the best-selling boy bands of all time. After the group’s hiatus in 2016, Payne launched a solo career, releasing hit singles like ‘Strip That Down’ and his debut album ‘LP1’ in 2019. He released the single ‘Teardrops’ earlier this year, with a second album planned.
Liam is survived by his son Bear, born in 2017, and his parents Karen and Geoff Payne.
