A day in the life of… She’s In Parties

You know what’s easier than following around your fave pop stars, day in, day out, to see what they’re up to right that minute? Asking them. This month, we nab Katie Dillon from She’s In Parties.

6:00am Alarm goes off after I annoyingly forget to turn it off from my previous workday.

8:00am Wake up. Wait…

9:00am Actually wake up and then get up (this is my lie-in as I’ve got the day off to go do band rehearsals), shower, brush teeth. The usual routine.

10:00am I’m finished with my makeup, but this is where the real fun begins: picking an outfit. Like many girls, I struggle to actually like anything I put on. I always start off fancy, then hate how I look. So I usually end up reverting to a skirt and jumper. God, I love autumn.

11:00am Grab a quick coffee to make me feel nice and anxious for the rest of the day and psych myself up for the journey to the tube and the inevitable bus delays.

11:30am – Get the tube to Liverpool Street and instantly regret my choice of jumper.

12:00pm My train leaves for Colchester. I put my headphones in and listen to the entire Fontaines DC album while completing a sudoku. As I look out the window, London turns to Essex; from skyscrapers to cows.

1:00pm Band practice start time, but being a band, it’s obligatory to never be on time. So actually…

1:30pm We load in and set up our phone in the corner in an attempt to get some full band content (being a musician nowadays actually means being a content creator).

1:55pm Herbie arrives, even more rock ’n’ roll than the rest of us with his lateness.

2:00pm We play through our set list and check back the video on our phone, only to realise the audio is rubbish. Can’t say we didn’t try.

2:30pm Time for a meal deal to sustain us for another set run-through. Never swaying from our usual orders. Some say you can tell a lot about a person from their meal deal choices. We’ll let you be the judge of that…

Charlie: Chicken Caesar wrap, Sprite, paprika crisps.

Herbie: Tuna sweetcorn pasta salad, BBQ beef Hula Hoops, cherry Pepsi Max.

Matt: BLT, pork pie, bottle of Coke.

Me: Tuna sweetcorn, salt & vinegar crisps, and a coffee (yes, I am the boring type of person who likes to be in bed by 8pm and does sudokus).

3:00pm Satisfied with our set run-throughs, we spend the rest of practice noodling around with half ideas and some song covers. Our favourite cover is currently Tears for Fears.

4:00pm Herbie suggests the idea of a pint, to which we tell ourselves is the perfect place to run through the long list of jobs our manager has given us. We take our job very seriously and are true professionals.

4:30pm Our new local is one Charlie has been going to since the dawn of time: Bricklayers. With the pints secured, we get the list out.

4:35pm Matt gets distracted by the green felt and colourful balls and suggests we play some pool. We quickly forget about our ‘to-do list’ and pick up the cues. Like I said… true professionals.

5:30pm Matt has beaten us all at pool multiple times (I don’t know why we even try) and, with that, I announce it’s time for my return back to London. We all hug goodbye and say, “We should do this again sometime.” Probably next week at the next band practice.

6:00pm My train departs Colchester, and I’m soon back to skyscrapers and bustling city-goers. The cows and green rolling hills are a thing of the past (even though Essex is flat and hills don’t really exist there).

7:00pm My partner greets me with a warm embrace at the station, allowing my music brain to detach, and my appetite kicks in. We discuss at length on the journey home what we will have for dinner, but it always ends up being pasta.

8:30pm We’ve made it home after popping into our local Sainsbury’s to buy the actual pasta (yes, we go through 500g in one sitting). My back aches from the walk with my guitar; I would let my partner carry it, but I’m a strong independent woman.

10:00pm We’ve made dinner (yep, it’s late).

10:30pm It’s bedtime. We chuck a Nile Red video on and slowly fall asleep. My workday of serving suited men is soon to begin. I long for the day we make it, so I never have to work in hospitality ever again. ■
