Dolores Forever’s debut album ‘It’s Nothing’ emerges as a raw yet carefully constructed examination of life’s complexities, from intimate personal struggles to broader societal issues. Julia Fabrin and Hannah Wilson have built a record on contrasts — between levity and vulnerability, tenderness and frustration — all wrapped in accessible yet powerful alt-pop.
The title-track, ‘It’s Nothing’, encapsulates the duo’s approach to these dualities, taken from a line in ‘Go Fast Go Slow’ that reflects on the weight behind what people dismiss as “nothing.” That weight is carried throughout the album, which deftly balances moments of emotional intensity with an air of empowerment. Tracks like ‘Someday Best’ embody this, with its standout line, “shut up and eat the pasta,” offering a cheeky but potent take on body image and self-acceptance.
Musically, ‘It’s Nothing’ spans a spectrum of moods, from the dreamy, introspective sounds of ‘Split Lip’, a moving ode to friendship, to the urgent and politically charged ‘Why Are You Not Scared Yet?’, which brings an energetic punk influence. Each song stands on its own while collectively contributing to an album that feels cohesive in its exploration of self and society.
Dolores Forever’s songwriting background shines through in the album’s tightly crafted structure, with every track feeling honed to its emotional core. The humour and warmth that run alongside heavier topics give the record a rich, human texture. ‘It’s Nothing’ makes a case for the importance of small, everyday moments — proving that in life, as in music, what we brush off as “nothing” often means everything.
