Brighton power duo ARXX have unveiled their new single ‘Swim’, a song dedicated to empowering trans people within their gender journeys. The track is taken from their upcoming album ‘Good Boy’, set for release on 4th October via Submarine Cat Records.
‘Swim’ was written after vocalist Hanni came out as non-binary late last year. “I wished I could have seen more representation when I was younger in order for me to get to a point where I understood myself,” Hanni explains. “The world currently doesn’t feel like a very safe place to be trans, and for that reason a lot of the dialogue around trans issues is really scary and saddening. Those stories are so necessary, but with ‘Swim’ I wanted to take a minute to express the joy that comes with learning yourself and feeling love from your community around you.”
The band hope that the single shows listeners that their shows are a safe space for both the band and audience alike. “I feel so safe when I’m performing to our audience, and that feeling of being held has helped me to embrace myself more. I want to put a mirror up to the audience and do the same thing for them,” shares Hanni.
ARXX, comprised of Hanni Pidduck and drummer Clara Townsend, have been on a journey of personal growth and identity exploration since the release of their debut 18 months ago. “This album is queer in its very nature; everything about it is queer and you can’t get away from it,” Hanni adds. “The songs are very personal, and a celebration of being who you want to be in whatever way that manifests, and being fucking honest about it. By the time you get to your thirties, you think you should know yourself by now. But actually, you continue to learn about yourself the entire time.”
