Alice Costelloe has announced her new EP ‘When It’s The Time’, inspired by the end of the world (kind of)

Alice Costelloe is set to release her new EP ‘When It’s The Time’ on 1st November via Moshi Moshi Records.

Her first release under her full name, having previously recorded as Al Costelloe (plus Big Deal and Superfood). The EP’s title-track ‘When It’s The Time’ is also out now.

Produced by Mike Lindsay, known for his work with Laura Marling and Jon Hopkins, the EP delves into themes of mortality and personal growth.

Costelloe explains the inspiration behind the title-track: “I live right by an intense religious organisation,I don’t want to say which one in case they damn me to hell even more, but they often knock on the door with leaflets about saving your soul because the end times are coming. I had started writing ‘When It’s The Time’ about moving on from a romantic relationship but the preachers that kept knocking at the door took the song in a different direction as I started to think about the end of things in general, beyond relationships, to the end of life, the end of the world, and this became a sort of theme of the EP.”

On the recording process, she adds: “When I brought this track into the studio I’d been playing it live with my band for a while, so in my mind it was just going to be a pretty straight forward classic sounding type of song with bass, guitar and drums. But thanks to the magic of Mike and his many machines it started going in a way more interesting and electronic direction.”

Reflecting on the EP’s overall themes, Costelloe says: “In a way, it’s about endings, moving on from old relationships, and contemplating the end of life and the end of the world, but it’s also about desire, desire to dance or drink a glass of wine with someone, but also desire to figure out how to make yourself a better life in a world that often feels apocalyptic.”

‘When It’s The Time’ was recorded and produced in March 2023 at Lindsay’s Margate studio, MESS. Costelloe will showcase new music from the EP tonight (10th September) at Next Door Records in Stoke Newington, London.
