Paris Paloma is an artist who thrives on making statements. Her music is powerful, evocative and supremely moving. Her debut album ‘The Cacophony’ captures all that grandeur and majesty, highlighting Paris as a vital new alt-pop voice.
A track like ‘His Land’ is an example of the drama and expansive quality of Paris’ music as the lilting piano and subtle strings provide the backdrop to her rousing vocals. We’re not in frothy pop banger territory here rather something more powerful and elemental. That’s not to say Paris doesn’t know her way around a hook, though, ‘Drywall’ is a beautifully winding and mellifluous melody, while ‘Boys, Bugs and Men’ provides a dashing touch of lightness.
The real moments on Paris’ debut, though, are when she cuts through on a heartstopping anthem like her epic hit ‘Labour’ or the rollicking abandon of ‘As Good A Reason’. Whether strident and rousing or soft and tender like the hushed glory of the album’s closing stretch of songs highlighted by the dreamy beatific splendour of slow-burning epic ‘The Warmth’, Paris’ sense of ambition and confidence in her voice and exactly what she wants to say shines through on an extremely impressive debut.
