A day in the life of… Charly Bliss

You know what’s easier than following around your fave pop stars, day in, day out, to see what they’re up to right that minute? Asking them. This month, we nab Eva Hendricks from Charly Bliss.

6:55am My perfect little doll eyes flutter open* after a long night of playing “mystery drink roulette*” with my friends late into the evening. JK, I am the world’s crustiest goblin as I scamper directly out of bed and into our weekly band meeting. Why is our weekly meeting at 7 am on Saturdays? Because Spencer said that’s the only day/time of the week he’s available. Is Spencer present at this meeting? No. However, I quickly squash any feelings of resentment as I remember we just released a song about how much we love each other, so feelings of resentment towards my bandmates are OFF LIMITS and OFF BRAND! In our Zoom meeting, we discuss merch strategy for our upcoming tour, and I tell the group about some of my hopes and dreams for our album release. Namely, playing a late-night talk show. Looking at you, Daddy Kimmel and Papa Colbert.

8:30am The meeting is over, and my FIANCÉ (!) Callum tells me it’s time to walk around the block and go outside for the first time all week. He can tell that I’ve been in hermit mode and need to experience the sun on my face, or else I will be locked in the throes of my mental illness(es) all weekend. We live in a mouldy shack, but it’s a two-minute walk from the most beautiful beaches I have ever seen in my life, which makes the toxic spore inhalation more than worth it. I am moved to tears on our morning walk by the beauty of the natural world.

9:15am We arrive at Protein Shake for our weekly breakfast date with our besties, Mik and Morgan. They arrive 40 minutes after we do because that is what true friendship looks like. Every weekend, we take turns being absurdly late to meet up with one another. We sit there for approximately two hours and gossip, even though we spent the entire evening together just last night.

MIDDAY Callum and I return home and decide it’s time to hang up some artwork that I won!!! Morgan owns a film lab (Lazarus Lab), and about six months ago, they held a gallery show that ended in a raffle and reader… I won the grand prize!!! This made everyone understandably upset and think that the raffle was rigged. However, despite the fact that Morgan is my bestie, I won that raffle fair and square! I was awarded a Pentax camera, five rolls of film, and $2000 in prints from this beautiful online gallery called Ethos Common. It was a dream come true getting to pick so many beautiful photographs to hang in our home. They make our mouldy shack look like a rich person home, and that is truly thrilling.

1:00pm Having WORKS of ART in our house (plus a new lamp from Facebook Marketplace) got me feeling motivated to clean, so I hyper-fixated on mould removal for a few hours. Very productive.

3:00pm Callum pulled me away from the cleaning frenzy by distracting me with some early birthday presents. He got me a very cute outfit from one of my favourite Australian clothing brands, Sister Studios, and a very special collage card featuring iconic photos from the last year of our life together. Callum and I met five years ago on my birthday, which we now refer to as our “Annibirthary” or “Birthaversary.” I am moved to tears for the second time today. Take that, Lexapro!!!

3:30pm   I realise I shouldn’t be wearing my new outfit because I smell like a teenager and am covered in dust, so I remove the fit and finally shower. While I’m de-goblining, Cal goes on a very long run, because that is what he loves to do. When he returns, we work on the gift registry for our wedding. We debate things like linen vs. percale, how to pronounce percale, and whether anyone should buy us anything at all when we’re already having our wedding in Australia, which is very far away for half of our guests?!???!!!!

6:45pm We pick up Mik and Morgan for dinner!!!!!!! This is sort of my unofficial pre-birthday dinner, so I choose to go to Costa Taco, which is the best Mexican food I have found so far in Australia. The food in Australia is so delicious, but they have not quite figured out Mexican cuisine just yet. At our local Zambrero (think Australian Chipotle), you can order your burrito with barbeque sauce or ranch dressing. Callum and I once went to a restaurant where the only veggie taco option involved hummus and carrots. Anyway – it was a true thrill when Costa Taco opened because their tacos are divine! I got absolutely wasted off of two margaritas.

8:30pm Callum is a sober king, so he drives us home while we all scream Chappell Roan, Missy Elliott, and Britney Spears in his face.

9:00pm One of the things I love most about where we live in Australia is that it is truly a SMALL TOWN. I have never lived anywhere so small. It means that if you go out anywhere, you’re bound to run into nearly everyone you know at one of three local bars. Tonight, we are at Bar Evelyn, and every single one of our friends is also there. We squeeze into a booth and take turns taking photos of each other with a camera that Mik got from TEMU that instantly prints on receipt paper. The results vary, and it never gets old!

10:30pm Callum is bored of having drunk people yell in his face, so we decide to go home and pass out like sensible adults! Before bed, I cry for the third time today about how lucky I feel to have such a wonderful group of friends and be part of a community for the first time as an adult. I fall asleep and have strangely detailed, esoteric Lexapro stress dreams, but overall, I am feeling very happy and fulfilled. ■
